So, I've already started to try and figure out some sort of "birth plan". With Chase and Logan I was induced and had an epidural. Pretty routine and uneventful. Well, I'm kind of deciding to change it up a bit. My goal is to try and let myself go in to spontaneous labor. The hard parts about that are 1) Ray is going to be in Salt Lake for HOSA competition March 18 & 19. I'm due the 19. That makes me a little nervous because he will be on a bus with the kids, he can't just drop whatever and drive himself down here. 2) My hips. I have some sort of issue with my hips when I'm pregnant so that they continually pop out and give me excruciating pain. But when this happens, I can't walk. My hips just drop out right underneath me. It's the worst at night and Ray will have to help me walk because it's just not possible on my own. This time around, it's started a lot earlier than with Chase, so we'll see how able I am to let myself go into labor.
The second thing I'm thinking about doing different is not getting an epidural, but some sort of narcotics through an IV. Before anybody gets up in arms about this, it's not that I don't LOVE the epidural. It's just that I react super easily to pain medication and an epidural is kind of tricky to not get too strong. With Logan it was too strong and resulted in a bad delivery process, but with Chase I had them give me a lighter dose and it was fabulous. So my thinking is, why not try something different and see if it works? I know I'll feel a lot more and it won't be so "numbing", but I want to try it and if I can't take it, then I can get an epidural. I don't know, just something I've thought about because my mom had the IV narcotics with 2 of us, and an epidural with one, and pretty much natural with another. She said that she enjoyed the IV thing so I want to give it a try.
I'm sure there are tons of opinions on this subject and just kind of curious what your thoughts are. I've talked to my doctor about it and he thinks that in my situation this would be a good alternative, but what do you think?

I say you do whatever you feel comfortable with! With Carter they initally gave me the pain meds in the iv because we were waiting on the anesthesiologist but they did nothing for me other than make me a bit loopy and I couldn't walk to the bathroom without help, however the epidural was my best friend with both kids. Good luck dear.
Try the IV thing and let me kow how it goes! I miss you being my neighbor! :(
sounds like the epi worked with chase so why mess with a good thing

Don't do ANY meds!! JK, that's how I do it and I love it. They even gave me pit with Mayelyn and my contractions actually weren't any worse. I say stay with the epidural, but you'll do what you feel comfortable with!!
I had Sayer with an epidural and Madi without anything because there wasn't time. With this baby, I am planning on going all natural again because in my opinion it was so much easier to be able to feel what you were doing. They did give me some pain meds through the IV when I got there to help with the after pains.
I would say try the IV meds if the epidural works too well on you. Good luck with whatever you choose!
I want to do my next natural... but I need AMBER to coach me... but just know that I waited along time to get the epidural with Carter cuz I wanted to do it natural and then at a 7 i got an epidural and it only worked on one side... which was worse because all the pain was on one side. So I KNOW you could do it with out meds! :)
With my daughter, I had the IV because my contractions were SO fast. It helps you rest between but you feel EVERYTHING! I loved it as it was perfect for me. And by the time I said epidural I was at 9 1/2 and they said I wasn't getting an epidural I was getting a baby and 30 minutes later I had her. I had a hard fast labor, and it hurts, but it was the most amazing thing because I honestly cannot tell you how bad it hurt because the second I saw my baby I didn't feel anymore pain!
Do what you want to do. We will be here for you. You can call me in the middle of the night and I'll help you walk while Ray is gone or take the kids. You know that.
I just read an article in a newspaper... which one? Gah! Either the Standard Journal (a.k.a. Standup Urinal) or the Scroll about using self hypnosis as a method of controlling pain. There is a doula here in town that is trained (one of two in our state) in teaching a woman how to hypnotize herself through labor. She says it doesn't completely take away the pain, but it makes it completely bearable. Maybe that's something you can look into. I bet there are programs in St.G or nearby available!
